Creatine phosphate is a high-energy phosphate compound, C4H10N3O5P, in muscle or other excitatory tissues such as brain and nerve, which is a temporary storage form of high-energy phosphate group. "When phosphocreatine is hydrolyzed, 10.3 kcal of free energy is released per mole of the compound, which is somewhat more than the energy released by ATP (7.3 kcal per mole)." Phosphocreatine transfers its phosphate group to the ADP molecule, catalyzed by creatine kinase. When some ATP is used for muscle contraction, ADP is produced. "In this case, through the action of creatine kinase, creatine phosphate quickly supplies ADP with phosphate groups, thereby restoring the normal high level of ATP." "Since muscle cells contain three to four times as much phosphocreatine as their ATP content, the former can store sufficient phosphate groups for short-term activity." "In the recovery phase after the activity, the accumulated creatine can be phosphorylated by ATP to regenerate creatine phosphate, which is a reverse reaction catalyzed by the same enzyme." "Since there are no other metabolic pathways for the synthesis and breakdown of phosphocreatine in the cell, this compound is well suited for this temporary storage function." In many invertebrates, phosphoarginine replaces phosphocreatine as the storage form of energy. The human sprint can be used as an example to illustrate the function of phosphocreatine. "The content of creatine phosphate in muscle is 17 μmol/g, and sprinting at full speed consumes 13 μmol/g creatine phosphate, so it can only be used as a source of energy for the first 4 seconds, but it provides time to regulate the activity of glycolytic enzymes so that the muscle can obtain energy through glycolysis."
