This compound is odorless with a bitter taste, showcasing its versatility as a feed additive. It dissolves effortlessly in pyridine yet remains nearly insoluble in water, methanol, acetone, chloroform, or ether, making it an ideal choice for specialized applications.
Bacitracin zinc premix, available as a light brown or yellow brown powder, emits a distinct odor. As a peptide antibiotic, it exhibits a bactericidal effect primarily on Gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting bacterial wall synthesis. Additionally, it binds to the cell membrane of vulnerable bacteria, compromising the membrane's integrity and causing critical intracellular substances to leak. This formulation is effective against Gram-positive bacteria and certain Gram-negative bacteria, with resistance developing slowly and no cross-resistance to other antibiotics observed. The premix promotes growth in livestock and poultry, enhancing feed conversion rates. When administered orally, Bacitracin zinc is minimally absorbed, with most expelled via feces within two days. It synergizes well with penicillin, streptomycin, neomycin, chlortetracycline, and colistin, though it is incompatible with quinoline, guitamycin, virginiamycin, and enlamycin. Its applications include treating infections from Gram-positive bacteria and penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus.
