Alpha-lipoic acid is a pale yellow powder crystal and almost tasteless. The solubility in water is small, about 1 g/L (20°C). Soluble in 10% NaOH solution, soluble in aliphatic solvent. It is soluble in methanol, ethanol, chloroform and ether. Lipoic acid is also known as alpha-lipoic acid. Lipoic acid has a chiral center and therefore has both R and S configurations. The native lipoic acid is a white crystal, only the R configuration, and only the R-configuration lipoic acid is able to function as a coenzyme by covalent conjugation to lysine residues via an amide bond. Synthetic lipoic acid is a mixture of equal proportions of R configuration and S configuration. It is a light yellow powder-like substance, which is easily soluble in lipid solvents
